I loved the week that I spent there. However you are on the ocean and from what I recall public freshwater fishing is not easily found..... rent a surf pole and let us know how you did.

I don't always fish for Bass, but when I do, I prefer big'uns. Fish hard my friends....

Freshwater? Not a darn thing that I know know of. Get a surf rod while you are down there or get a trout rod and go fish the sounds.

You can buy a cheap saltwater reel and use your freshwater rods in the sound. Check eBay you might be able to get a deal. I got two Mitchell 302 saltwater surf reels and the tackle shop guys told me I made a great choice and got a good price for them.

The sounds are saltwater, you'll need proper gear for that. There are many, many species that can be caught there.

In the sounds target speckled trout and flounder, they both have very sharp teeth, don't try to lip them. Also drum which are a lot of fun to catch. All three are very good to eat, check your NC fishing regulations before you decide to keep one. I target all three, they can be caught on plastics.

Also, bull sharks cruise the sounds by the inlets, the occasional marsh marlin (more sharp teeth here) can be caught along with white fish (very tastee) spots, grunts, blow toads and so on.

What size jig heads do you use w/ the plastics in the sound. How about line, I was thinking spooling 15# big game trilene, am I on the right track.

Your line should be good, you might consider a Flurocarbon leader.

I bought a custom rod matched to a Shimano Stradic spinning reel at Hatteras Jack and this is how he set me up. I chose this because I asked Ryan White (the owner) "what do you use in the sound?". He fishes all the time all over the east coast and grew up down there. I'm now fishing his setup.

10# fluorescent yellow PowerPro Braid on a 15# green backer. I tied an 18", Trilene TransOptic Monofilament leader on the braid with an Allbright Special knot and used 3/16 oz jigheads on shad swim baits and 1/4" red jigheads on my Gulp shrimp. My best luck came on the shrimp. If you get out on a boat and fish for trout in the grass consider fishing the shrimp under a popping cork.

I almost took along some of my crappie plastics and unfortunately didn't. I could have caught a ton of bait fish which in turn would have translated into fresh cut bait for drum. I'll save that for next year.

Ryan (and dang near everyone else) recommends the Gulp shrimp, choose your color, white and natural seem to be popular. He also uses a Berkley shad swim bait in a natural shad color.

Here is a link to the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries. Helpful information on license and other regulations.
