Had a rough morning with a dead battery in the Boss when I got to her at the Chagrin at 4 am. Had to jump the battery to get the lower unit up and let it charge until it started. Pulled her up to Geneva and lowered her in, and had to pull out and jump it again. Finally got out to 72 NE of Geneva, and started setting lines around 7:45. Program was 50 true trips dragging meat, and a couple spoons 100 back of big boards. Very slow pick all day with a double here and there. Mostly pink and purples did all the with double willows and giant colorado blades. Went 12 for 21 and was pissed that we couldn't keep them on the line today. Never loss so many eyes in my life, but thats fishing when it comes to walleyes. We did pull a giant fish OH perch of a pink harness. I haven't put in pictures sense last year, and forgot how to down load my pics. A little help with that if possible would be great. Then I can post some pics of eyes and giant 16'' perch. Thanks and good luck out there
I keep one of those portable jump packs on my boat. Charge it once per month. That way i have it when i need it and can hand it to another boat if needed.

That's why I hate using boards, lose too many fish

MD,
What's the name of your jump pack and where did you get it? (Sounds like a really wise precaution!)
I bought it at Wallmart and it ran $50 a few years ago. They were in the battery section. I do not recall the brand. It has built in jumper cables and a 12 volt car outlet. Figure i can jump, run the marine radio off of it or charge a cell if needed. I keep it at home over the winter as well and it comes in handy.

I also carry a battery pack at all times and it stays in the boat. Also any boat I own the first thing i do is install two batteries and a Perko switch. Also two new batteries every 2-3 years. Don't ever run two or more batteries different ages. A bad one will pull a good one down.
I also cant believe you went on Erie with a low battery. Nothing said your alternator wasn't charging and the first time you shut down no matter how far you ran it wouldn't have started. Sorry but a pretty dumb thing to do. Especially with most people to day not helping people in distress.
I would be looking for what electronic is killing your battery first.......then look for a new one. Alternator might be bad also.
Not the alternator or the battery wouldn't have charged going out and he'd been stuck.Either battery or short. That's why I like the perko switch, kills power to everything but my bilge pumps. If they were that down I switch to the other to start.
Thanks guys for all your great thoughts on my dead battery. I know my boss won't let me down, new boat ,new engine, and if any doubt of break down. I wouldn't of left the marina after all. That's why I have tow insurance, and I had jumper pack, jumper cables on board with us. Smart not so dumb By the way perch was 2.2 pounds Good Luck Guys

Well Im sure no disrespect was meant. But anyone who has spent time on Erie much learns to be worried about such things. Personally I would not of went relying on my tow insurance a jumper box or cables when I had electrical problems. Guess that's just me. My boat has two batteries and one went out first of the year and sucked enough juice from the remaining one to make it not start. I went up to the bait shop and paid twice the price to get one. I also had a jumper box and cables and insurance. i dont go on the lake unless everything is right.People today are unlikely to jump you. Jumper boxes fail, and some times its a long wait for a tow service when you need them. In the right position storms, high waves or fails to close to shore or God help us we need to get some one to shore in a hurry that tow boat may not help at all.
Now not saying your wrong but just letting you know why my opinion is what it is. And I have been in all them positions at least once and a battery not starting would have cost a life! Fishing isnt ever worth that.
