You can use them but they have regulations on size. They can't be bigger than 10 feet diameter and the mesh can't be smaller than 1/4" or bigger than 1". You can look on the DNR website for the specifics, but I don't find anything about Lake Erie prohibitions.

thanks i knew about the diamter and mesh size, but a few years ago a guy told me that using a cast net in lake erie was illegal i never found a reg prohibiting it. i am thinking about taking the long walk out to the fairport light house and it would save a lot of trouble carrying a net in a back pack with an empty bucket insted of carrying a bucket with water out there

Unless it has changed, I thought it was illegal to use on Erie.

If you have a dealers license you can not use a cast net on lake Erie.

But if you do not have a dealers license you can unless posted.

"Minnow dip net (square) meshes may not be larger than 1/2 inch. The maximum size on any side of dip nets is 4 feet in the Inland Fishing District, 6 feet in the Lake Erie District. Bait fish may be taken with cast nest except within a distance of one thousand feet down stream from any dam posted with Division of Wildlife signs indicating cast net use is prohibited. It is unlawful to use a cast net with a square mesh less than 1/4 inch or larger than 1 inch on a side, or with a diameter of less than 6 feet or more than 10 feet."
