I would use at least a 5/0 and hook it through the nose or just behind the dorsal fin. I use about an 16" leader and a 1 1/2 oz weight. If the chin is pretty big I may use a bigger weight. If your fishing a river with a good amount of current I opt for a 2 oz no roll sinker.

Np. I'm sure there is a lot if other ways to rig it that's just what I use. I fish it on 6500's. Just turn on the clicked and wait or slowly troll it back. I've used both methods

just my opinion i have had best results using no.5 circle hook through tail makes for alot of wounded movement brings in the big dogs we caught a few last weekend at knox lake buddy caught the winner 42 lb flathead
I wound up buying a 6/0 red mustads from the bait store at countyline and sunbury. My plan is to hit Hoover in the kayak and try to get them in on lighter gear with 30lb line. I'm looking for a challenge until I can afford a good catfish rod. Any suggestions? I like spinning reels. It's pretty much too late to change my mind there. I'm willing to spend a few hundred on the rod and reel.
I'd think you would want a bait caster over a spinning reel since its got more pulling power and less gears. I tell you I've caught some pretty decent sized cats on diddly 4lb test its just a matter of letting the tucker out. Good Luck!

Sorry submitted that to early...... The have multiple brands of bait runners under $100. These are great spinning reels with clickers. Okuma and tica make nice bait runners. I'm sure you can find a nice rod I like the mojo muskie for around a $100. Don't know if you can get it in spinning. I use to fish catfish from a kayak its awesome.
