What are your thoughts on a canoe vs. Kayak. I can not decide which to purchase. I have a chance to get a 16' Coleman canoe barely used for $225

If you go in through Mudro to Basswood river you won't see any boats. If you go in through Fall Lake, you will only see boats for the first hour paddle up Basswood and then the motors can't go any further. If you just want to stay on Basswood with no motors you can camp by American Point, check it out. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I appeciate it. I thought of Basswood naturally for big fish but I've also heard so many stories of big waves and power boats. I'll have to give that some thought.

I visited bwca this year for the first time and am hooked. It is my turn to plan a trip and I'd love any tips you may have. I want to target smallies to the extent possible. Looking for numbers of decent size. We don't mind racking up some miles paddling and portaging. We'd prefer to stay south of the border due to hassle of licensing and passports and all. But open to any advice really. This year we did lakes 1,2,3,4, hudson, insula (base), alice, and thomas. We caught quite a few smallies in or very near swift water - is that typical?

Not sure what time to go - mostly when fishing is best...
